TITLE: Intern - Volunteer Services Intern


LOCATION: History Center - 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102

 

COMPENSATION: Typical starting salary $16.50 hourly 


HOURS: This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately September 14, 2026 to December 20, 2026. A part-time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern’s school schedule and operational needs. Preferred working hours are 3+ days a week, typically M-F between 8:30am and 5pm. The internship includes some evening and weekend shifts, which will be scheduled in advance with the intern.

SEMINAR EVENTS: Interns are required to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.

DESCRIPTION:  The Volunteer Services Intern supports the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) Volunteer Services team in coordinating event volunteers, managing volunteer communications, and maintaining database infrastructure. This role focuses on delivering high-quality customer service to both staff and volunteers, assisting with recruitment, and capturing volunteer stories to highlight community impact.


RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) Support coordination of Event Volunteers - receive volunteer requests from MNHS staff, post opportunities, email volunteers, create detailed reminder emails, and follow up with staff and volunteers after the event; 2) Provide a high level of customer service to both volunteers and staff in other departments, ensuring consistent communication and relationship building; 3) Help plan and execute the annual Fall Volunteer Recognition event; 4) Assist with volunteer recruitment and placement, including posting shifts, updating opportunity descriptions, and setting up onsite training for new volunteers; 5) Write at least two Volunteer Spotlight articles for the Volunteer Newsletter and Website; 6) Attend at least four Special Events (scheduled around the intern’s availability) and get to know volunteers; 7) Systems Used: Volgistics volunteer management tool, Google Suite, HubSpot.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.

  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or a graduate with a degree in the following areas: Non-Profit Management, Human Resources, Event Management, Government Relations, History, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, etc.

  • Excellent Customer Service Skills

  • Relationship builder

  • Communicates well in person, on the phone, and through email

  • Solid organization skills and attention to detail

  • Interested in meeting new people of different ages and backgrounds

  • Experience volunteering either for a museum or in any other capacity is appreciated but not required
